In April 2016, Universal Studios Hollywood unveiled one of its most ambitious and anticipated projects: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. With thousands of eager fans pouring through the gates for the grand opening, safety was just as critical as the immersive experience itself.
Behind the magic lies a layer of engineered protection and durability. Universal Studios entrusted Pacific Netting Products to design and install custom safety netting solutions as part of its multi-year, 75% park-wide renovation.
Strength Where It Matters Most: PNP’s Custom Dyneema® Barrier
PNP’s engineering team collaborated closely with Universal Studios to develop a safety barrier system capable of withstanding the high-performance environment of a world-class theme park. The solution? A custom-fabricated barrier system made from 3/4” heavy knotted Dyneema® netting, known for its ultra-high strength and durability.
Highlights of the Installation:
- Heavy-Duty Performance: Dyneema® is one of the strongest synthetic fibers in the world. The 3/4” knotted configuration provided robust protection from falling or flying debris beneath and around the park’s roller coasters.
- Low Visibility, High Safety: Safety doesn’t have to compromise aesthetics. The netting was engineered to blend seamlessly into the environment, preserving the visual integrity of the attraction while offering dependable protection.
- Custom Color Matching: PNP went a step further by color-matching the netting to the unique palette of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This ensured the safety solution remained as immersive and unobtrusive as possible.
- Built to Last: With an anticipated lifespan of 10 years, the Dyneema® netting provides a long-term solution with minimal maintenance, even in the demanding conditions of a major theme park.
